In this model, if the trans-acting factors, which recognize weak splicing signals (gray circles), are decreased, introns with the weak signals remain in the mRNA. If the concentration of the factors increases, several regions are recognized as introns and then the large region is spliced out as a single intron. It is not known if the trans- or cis-acting factors in the model are the same.
