Original 2.47±0.21 2.51±0.33 2.22±0.22 2.38±0.19 2.36±0.29 2.6±0.26 P = 0.07 RI vs. RE; P = 0.03 ACV vs. IPS vs. USB
Surrogate 2.67±0.27 2.8±0.11 2.42±0.21 2.57±0.18 2.55±0.29 2.67±0.23 P < 0.001 Surrogate vs. original

Data are means ± SD, 2-way ANOVA was used to study the effects of ventilator mode (ACV, IPS, USB) and respiratory timing (RI versus RE) on the original time series. Comparison between surrogate data and original data was performed using Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test.
