Eight- to twenty-week-old female Strain 13 guinea pigs were infected with the indicatedstrain and dose (in plaque-forming units [PFU]) of Junin virus by the intraperitoneal route,or as a control, age- and sex-matched Strain 13 guinea pigs were mock-infected (indicated by−) by the intraperitoneal route. Randomly pre-selected animals were humanely killed at9-days post-infection, and the spleen and liver were harvested for histopathologic analysis, performed as described in the Materials and Methods.
FN = fibrinoid necrosis; AI = acute inflammation; WPN = white pulp necrosis; PI =portal inflammation; LI = lobular inflammation; N = necrosis; S = steatosis; 0 = none; 1= mild, 2 = moderate; 3 = severe. Tabulated score is indicated on the bottom row.
