The absence of IL-1 receptor antagonist enhances serum S-SMase activity after LPS injection. Wild-type (wt) and IL-1ra knockout (KO) mice were injected i.p. with 25 mg/kg LPS, and a group of wild-type mice was injected with saline. Serum was collected 3 h later and assayed for SMase activity in the presence of Zn²⁺. There were five mice in the saline-wt and LPS-wt groups and three mice in the LPS–IL-1ra KO group. Each of the three possible pairwise comparisons between groups in this figure indicated a significant difference (P < 0.01).
