Statistical analysis included t tests, Mann Whitney U, χ2, and Fisher exact tests as appropriate.

Sepsis-specific variables that were followed but were not a part of the EGDT intervention protocol. Activated protein C was never administered in the ED or during the initial 6 h of therapy. Steroid administration was at the discretion of the attending physician in the ED or ICU but was not a part of the EGDT protocol.
