The production of mature ribosomes involves final processing of pre-16S rRNA. (B) Schematic diagram of the FISH method and RT assay targeting the 16S rRNA pool. Extracts of total RNA contain pools of pre-16S rRNA and mature 16S rRNA which serve as targets for RT. Length heterogeneity is used to determine the relative abundance of pre-16S rRNA and mature 16S rRNA.
