Anionic and cationic charges in the three study groups. The mean apparent strong ion difference (SIDa) and the mean effective strong ion difference (SIDe – or sum of ALb, PO4- and HCO3-) in the three groups: patients with acute renal failure (ARF), a control group matched for Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation score without ARF, and an intensive care unit (ICU) control group without ARF. Alb, albumin effect; PO4-, phosphate effect; HCO3-, CO2 effect. The ARF group was associated with a high strong ion gap (SIG) and a high phosphate concentration compared with the other groups.
