Sesbania javanica growing successfully in deep water illustrates the contribution of stem hypertrophy and adventitious root formation to flooding tolerance. Both swollen stem and roots are rich in internal gas-filled spaces (aerenchyma), a key feature of the many aquatic and amphibious species (monochrome image previously published in Jackson, 2006).
