Model for synergy between the HBM and LxxLL motifs. (A) The activation domain of LZIP recruits a coactivator complex including HCF-1. The two LxxLL motifs may interact with other regions in HCF-1 or possibly other cofactors. Recruitment of this complex results in strong transcriptional activation. (B) Mutations of the LxxLL motifs or HBM weaken the association by eliminating one or more points of contact and thus reduce activation.
