Figure 10

Polarization of the spiral electrode due to the field gradients. (a) A field applied to a 1 μm latex particle suspension where the spiral electrodes are not connected to any power supply. Due to the low conductivity of the solution, the electrodes become polarized and attract the particles to the electrode surface. (b) Upon removal of the applied AC field, a small 3 V-DC is applied across the two electrodes. The particles are immobilized on the electrode surface and nearby particles are attracted to the electrode.
