Comparison between the secondary structure elements formed in rmMBP upon association with lipids or with actin. The black zigzag represents the amphipathic α-helix that forms in the immunodominant epitope (Asn81–Thr92) upon binding lipid vesicles (12,13). The proline-rich segment immediately following (and slightly overlapping) this epitope forms a transient polyproline type II helix (6). The potential regions that might undergo changes in secondary structure upon binding actin are shaded.
