Blood glucose levels of the control (n = 6; □) and diabetic (n = 9; ▴) rats are shown during the hyperinsulinemic severe hypoglycemic clamp as well as 1 day prior to and 1 day after the clamp. On the day of the clamp, insulin was infused intravenously at a constant rate (0.2 U·kg−1·min−1) to lower blood glucose. Once the blood glucose was ≤15 mg/dl, the clock was reset and glucose was infused to maintain a level of severe hypoglycemia between 10 and 15 mg/dl for 1 h. Following the 1 h of severe hypoglycemia, the insulin infusion was stopped and the rate of glucose infusion increased to restore euglycemia for 4 h. *P < 0.05.
