(A, B, D, E ) Electron micrographs of negatively stained gp26 fibers from bacteriophage P22, HK620, Sf6 and HS1 showing rod-like structures. In Sf6 and HS1 a prominent globular knob-like domain is seen at one tip of the fiber. In all images scale bar corresponds to 50 nm. (C, F) Topological diagram for the two sub-classes of gp26 homologues. In (C) is the P22/HK620 topology where a short β-helix connects the main α-helical core to a short inverted C-terminal coiled-coil domain. In (F) is the putative topology of Sf6/HS1 tail needle, which presents a large globular knob, likely C-terminal of the helical core.
