Ragweed pollen extract (RWE) induces release of biogenic amines from RBL-2H3 cells in the absence of IgE antibodies. Exposure to RWE triggers release of histamine in a dose-dependent manner (A). Heat-treatment of RWE (RWEH), administration of antioxidant (N-acetyl-L-cysteine; NAC) as well as mitochondrial complex I and complex II inhibitors together (rotenone; Rot, 3-nitropropionic acid; 3-NPA) abrogates the effect of RWE on serotonin release (B).
