Table 2.

The volume magnetic susceptibility (relative to water) of ″average normal″ brain tissue in frontal lobe calculated according to Eq. 10, and Table 1

GM, 10−3 ppm WM, 10−3 ppm CSF, 10−3 ppm
Proteins −4.17 −4.56 −0.0016
Lipids 2.37 5.52 0
Non-heme iron 4.40 4.40 0.33
Deoxyhemoglobin 0.90 0.21 0
Total 3.50 5.57 0.33

The contributions from tissue compositions, i.e., protein, lipids, non-heme iron and deoxyhemoglobin, are listed separately. The contribution of deoxyhemoglobin was calculated based on the relationships Δ fd = R2/2π, Δ fd/f0 = 4/3π ·χ d, and the R2 values of 2.9 sec−1 (GM) and 0.68 sec−1 (WM) at 3T (8).
