Molecular mechanism of pre-mRNA splicing. The splicing process is initiated by recognition of the splice donor and acceptor sites by U1 snRNP and U2 snRNP auxiliary factor, respectively, and binding of splicing factor 1 to the branch point. Thereupon, the intron ends are brought in close proximity. This is followed by further assembly of the spliceosome and remodeling of the complex, which eventually becomes catalytically active to splice out the intron and join the ends of the exons.
