Breeding strategy. Male LEW/SsN. +/op were crossed with normal BN/SsN rats. The progeny from this mating are all phenotypically normal, since it is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. We intercrossed the F1 generation and selected the affected F2 pups. Radiography within 3 days of birth was used to identify mutant animals by the failure to develop bone marrow cavities. The breeding strategy was continued in successive odd and even generations.
