To study sugar signal transduction in A. thaliana, this plant was transformed with a construct in which the GUS reporter was driven by the barley 6-sft promoter. GUS activity measured after overnight treatment of A. thaliana seedlings with an osmotic control is put to zero and after sucrose treatment GUS activity is put to 100%. A specific small GTPase ADP-ribosylating toxin (C3 oxin) or an inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-OH-kinase impair this reponse to sugar.
