Scheme of a hypothetical role of CCN3 in the bone marrow niche. CCN3 (yellow) suppresses the BMP (red) activity by direct binding. On the while, CCN3 binds to Notch receptor, which results in the signal stimulation. Notch signal stimulation is principal for the maintenance of stem cell property, blocking the terminal differentiation. CCN3 secreted by stromal stem cells modulates the growth and differentiation of neighboring osteoblasts and hematopoietic stem cells
