Cell counts in activated and control mice. NGFXAT mice that received HSVcrelac (Cre) or HSVlac (Lac) virus were habituated and then maintained in the vivarium (Normal), exposed to rote performance (Performance), or exposed to a repeated learning paradigms (Learning). After retrograde tracing with FG, brains were removed, sectioned, and subjected to counting of cell bodies labeled with FG (FG+), ChAT (ChAT+), or both labels (double positive, FG+, and ChAT+). Histograms represent numbers of positive cells in each group. Column 1, Fluoro-Gold: total FG+ cells ipsilateral to virus injection and tracer deposition.
