Basal forebrain cell size in activated and control mice. NGFXAT mice received either HSVcrelac (activated) or HSVlac (control) virus and were assigned to one of three groups: Normal, Performance, or Learning. After retrograde tracing with FG, brains were removed, sectioned, and subjected to counting of fluorescent-labeled cell bodies (FG+), immunostained ChAT+ cell bodies, and double-positive (FG+ and ChAT+) cell soma. Double-positive cells have been binned according to somal size.
