Genome reconstitution in evolved strains of E. coli. PFGE was used to follow genome reconstitution after irradiation at 5,000 Gy. Samples collected at 1-hour intervals are shown. DNAs were digested with NotI prior to electrophoresis. The black arrows indicate the approximate times when the CB1000 and CB2000 cultures resumed normal growth, as determined by OD measurements. Sample collection was halted 1 hour after the resumption of growth in both cases.
