All strains are derivatives of E. coli K-12 and are F− λ− unless stated otherwise. cat, kan, and tet are genes specifying resistance to chloramphenicol, kanamycin, and tetracycline, respectively.

Tetracycline-resistant transductants were tested for UV sensitivity (recA).
