Relative risk was adjusted for sex (for all); smoking variable (never smokers, quit ≥10 years and smoked <20 cigarettes/day, quit ≥10 years and smoked ≥20 cigarettes/day, quit 5–9 years and smoked <20 cigarettes/day, quit 5–9 years and smoked ≥20 cigarettes/day, quit 1–4 years and smoked <20 cigarettes/day, quit 1–4 years and smoked ≥20 cigarettes/day, current smokers with <20 cigarettes/day, and current smokers with ≥20 cigarettes/day); total energy intake (continuous), energy-adjusted saturated fat, red meat, and total folate intake (continuous scale); body mass index (<20, 20–<25, 25–<30, ≥30 kg/m2, missing); physical activity (low, moderate, and high level); history of diabetes; and use of other types of alcoholic beverages.
The P value for linear trend was calculated by using the median values for each category as a single continuous variable.
