Escaping X-inactivation (Xi) causes no measurable increase in transcription level or noise. (a) Male/female (M/F) expression ratios (mean ± standard error of the mean) of each gene escaping Xi in 20 non-gender-specific tissues are shown. No increase in expression levels was observed in females. (b) Correlation of the noise values (log10(CV(%)2)) with gene expression values (log10(abundance)) of X chromosome genes subject to Xi (grey dots) and escaping Xi (black dots) in HeLa cells. No skewed enrichment in expression or fluctuation of genes escaping Xi was observed. (c) Distributions of logarithmic male/female (M/F) CV ratios of genes escaping Xi; the M/F ratios are close to 1 in most cases.
