Ca(II) data were obtained from Ref. (24). Values in the presence of Mg(II) were estimated from equation KM = (koff+kcat)/kon with the koff set to 1e-3 s−1. kon for ES formation (i.e., in the absence of added metal ions) is calculated from the known Kd of 300 nM and the above koff. Mg(II) data were fit to the equation kapp = (k0 + k2[M]2/K12 + k4[M]4/(K1K2)2/(1+[M]2/K12 + [M]4/(K1K2)2) as described in Materials and Methods to yield a k2 of 3.7e4 M−1s−1 (K2 of 30 nM), K1 of 2.6 mM, and a K3 of 4.1 mM. Parameters are as defined in Fig. 6.
