The bottom panels illustrate the three scenarios (contrast threshold vs. external noise on log–log axes) in which improvement in performance can occur as a result of training: (left) an improvement only at the low noise levels; (middle) an improvement only at the high noise levels and (right) improvement across all noise levels. Predictions as to how the parameters of the model changes for the three scenarios are given below each of the three panels.
