The epidermis is a stratified epithelium comprised of four distinct layers—the basal layer, spinous layer, granular layer, and the stratum corneum. Keratin filaments are shown connecting to desmosomes at sites of cell–cell contact and to hemidesmosomes at the basement membrane.
