Figure 1. Incidence of Decreased PML in Cancer.
PML has been found to be down-regulated in many cancer types. One recent study used tissue microarrays to study the incidence of decreased PML expression in many different human neoplasms (Gurrieri et al, 2004). Each type of neoplasm is depicted with a heat map of the percent of samples studied that showed a complete loss of PML expression. Light green indicates a lower incidence of loss of PML expression while dark green indicates a greater loss. Furthermore, PML was decreased, though not completely lost in: 31% of colon adenocarcinomas, 36% of lung adenocarcinomas, 63% of prostate adenocarcinomas, 21% of breast adenocarcinomas, 24% of CNS tumors, 36% of germ cell tumors, and 14% of lymphomas. An asterisk (*) indicates that a decreased PML expression has been observed for this type of neoplasia in an independent study.
