Testing protocol for overloading specimens in uniaxial compression. Following the overload, the samples were unloaded to zero force resulting in a residual strain, which was the baseline strain for subsequent modulus and toughness measurements, indicated by the horizontal dashed line. To avoid unintentional damage, the control group was subjected to only the three modulus measurements and the final load to failure.
