Timing of expression of spoVB homologues. Strains were shaken vigorously in 2× SG medium at 37°C, and samples were collected for OD determinations and β-galactosidase assays. Time in sporulation is relative to the entry into stationary phase, which occurs at an OD of ∼3.0 in this medium. Growth rates (×) were similar for all strains, so only a single curve is plotted. β-Galactosidase activity (β-gal. act.) was assayed for PS832 (wild type with no lacZ fusion, ⋄), DPVB335 (yabM-lacZ, •), DPVB327 (ykvU-lacZ, ▴), and DPVB336 (ytgP-lacZ, ▪).
