Correlation between change in total solvent-accessible surface area and PC1. Each of the 17,484 points represents values from one residue in the thermodynamic database of 120 proteins. The x axis indicates the value of the first principal component. The y axis indicates the total change in average solvent-exposed surface area (ΔASAap + ΔASApol) for each residue in the ensemble simulated folded to unfolded transition. As discussed in the text, a correlation is evident between PC1 value and solvent-exposed surface area, highlighting the biophysical interpretation of PC1 in terms of area.
