Schematic summary of brain areas that send significant projection to the MPL. A projection was considered significant if more than five retrogradely labeled cells were present in a section of the area following the injection of retrograde tracer into the MPL. Projections are indicated from the auditory cortex, the lateral preoptic area, the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus, the lateral hypothalamic area, the subparafascicular area of the thalamus, the posterior intralaminar thalamic nucleus, the medial nucleus of the medial geniculate body, the zona incerta, deep layers of the superior colliculus, the periaqueductal gray, the cuneiform nucleus, the external cortex of the inferior colliculus, and the periolivary area.
