Partial correlation, across neurons, of four indices reflecting selectivity for global, local, large, and small shape. The preferred shape at the global level in hierarchical displays was significantly correlated with the preferred large (but not small) solid shape. The preferred shape at the local level in hierarchical displays was significantly correlated with the preferred small (but not large) solid shape. The preferred large solid shape was significantly correlated with the preferred small solid shape. Each partial correlation coefficient reflected the degree to which shape selectivity under a given condition (say global) was correlated with shape selectivity under another condition (say large) after factoring out their common correlations with shape selectivity under other conditions (in this example, local and small).
