Simultaneous extracellular recording of the retinal input (S, small, slow potential) together with the LGN spike (large, faster potential). Voltage sampled at 40 kHz. Note that the retinal firing rate is significantly higher than that of the LGN. In this example there were 12 S potentials, but only three LGN spikes, so the transfer ratio was 3/12 = 0.25.
