(online color at: www.lpr-journal.org) Design of a Laminar Optical Tomography system. Linear photomultiplier tube (PMT) arrays detect fluorescence or reflectance light emerging from the tissue. The incident light is scanned using galvanometer mirrors, which also de-scan the returning light. The different detector elements on the PMT arrays detect light emerging from different distances away from the scanning spot. The wider these distances, the deeper, on average, the light has traveled into the tissue.
