Substantial demyelination in EAE with ablation of proliferating reactive astrocytes. A–F, Survey images of dorsal columns of thoracic spinal cord of GFAP-TK mice that were either healthy (A, D) or had EAE+TK/PBS (B, E) or EAE+TK/GCV (C, F). Sections were stained either with the myelin stain Luxol fast blue (LFB, A–C), or with single-color immunofluorescence for myelin basic protein (MBP, red, D–F). Note that there is reduced staining for both LFB and MBP due to demyelination in EAE+TK/PBS (B, E) relative to healthy (A, D), and that the demyelination is as severe or worse in EAE+TK/GCV (C, F) relative to EAE+TK/PBS (B, E).
