Figure 5.
Localizations of nerve growth- or cell adhesion–related gene expressions in the E14 chick cornea. In situ hybridization was performed on E14 corneal sections using labeled probes for KERA, SLIT2, and MPZL1. (A–C) KERA, the gene for the KSPG core protein keratocan, was expressed in corneal endothelium and stroma but not in corneal epithelium. (D–F) SLIT2, the gene for a soluble neuro-regulatory ligand, was expressed in the anterior corneal stroma and the corneal epithelium, but not in the posterior stroma or endothelium. (G–I) MPZL1, the gene for a MPZ-like transmembrane protein thought to be involved in cell–cell adhesion and migration, was expressed primarily in the peripheral and mid–corneal epithelium (G, arrowheads), especially in the basal epithelial layer (I), but not in the corneal stroma or endothelium. ep, epithelium; st, stroma. Bar, 100 μm.
