Estrogen decreases the local concentration of TNF-α in the brain following severe burn injury. Using the ELISA method, we found that at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24 hours post burn there was a significant decrease in the levels of TNF-α in those animals receiving 17 β-estradiol compared with the placebo group.
