Mutations of key amino acid residues of the Gly-R-α1 and GABA-R-ρ1 alter the alcohol cutoff. Alcohol cutoff values for the wild-type Gly-R-α1 and GABA-R-ρ1 are from Fig. 1A, and cutoff values for the Gly-R-α1 S267Q and GABA-R-ρ1 I307S/W328A mutants are taken from Fig. 2 A and B, respectively. Alcohol cutoff values for the GABA-R-ρ1 mutants I307S and W328A were determined as described in Fig. 2 A and B. The bar representing the alcohol cutoff of the GABA-R-ρ1 I307S/W328A mutant (>12 carbons in the alcohol chain) is broken at 12 because greatly decreased aqueous solubility prevented testing of alcohols longer than dodecanol. All receptors were expressed in Xenopus oocytes.
