Stretches were applied either without the step release (circles) or at intervals of 0.2 ms (triangles) and 2 ms (squares) after a step release of 4 nm hs−1. The star indicates the isometric tension before the release. Lc(0) and Lc(2) are critical lengths before and 2 ms after the release, respectively. Letters on the traces indicate the following events: bc, step release; cd, quick recovery; be, stretch before the release; and de, stretch 2 ms after the release.
