A region diagnostic of polymer modification is shown before (3) and after (4) the Diels–Alder reaction with cyclopentadiene. The spectra show that the olefinic protons of the maleimide groups (*) disappear and olefinic protons of norbornene moieties (**) appear, indicating that the conversion of 3 to 4 proceeds in high yield.
