The relative signs of aberrations in the wavefront can have a large effect on the MTF, even when the RMS errors are equal. In this example, a fifth-order term is either added or subtracted from a third-order term to produce two wavefronts. The subtractive wavefront produces the better MTF. Both MTFs are better at some frequencies than the MTF for the third-order term alone.
