The effect of medium osmolarity on cell viability (A) and ATP production (B) for chondrocytes isolated, encapsulated at the low cell encapsulation density, and cultured for 24 h in chondrocyte medium at 330 (i.e., standard chondrocyte medium), 400, 450, and 500 mOsm. Medium osmolarity was adjusted by the addition of potassium chloride and sodium chloride. ATP production (ng) for each gel was normalized to its respective gel wet weight (g).
