FIG. 1.
SdiA is activated in CBA/J mice infected with Yersinia enterocolitica but confers no fitness advantage. Ten CBA/J mice were inoculated with 8.1 × 108 wild-type Yersinia CFU (A), ten mice were inoculated with 8.4 × 108 yenI mutant CFU (B), and ten mice were mock infected with LB (C). The following day, all 30 mice were inoculated with 9.0 × 108 CFU of a 1:1 mixture of the sdiA+ and sdiA mutant Salmonella RIVET strains. At various time points, bacteria were recovered from feces. The percentage of sdiA+ or sdiA::mTn3 resolution is plotted over time for each group. (D) Number of Salmonella bacteria recovered from fecal pellets from mice in panel A, B, or C. (E) Number of Yersinia recovered from fecal pellets from mice in panel A or B. (F) The log competitive index (logCI) of the sdiA+ and sdiA mutant Salmonella strains from the mice in panel A is plotted over time. Error bars for panels A to E represent standard errors of the means. For panel F, the error bars represent the 95% confidence intervals, and all data had P value of >0.05.
