The strain background was E. coli ECL116 for all promoter truncations shown (1).
β-Galactosidase activity was measured from single-copy lacZ fusion strains grown in MOPS-buffered minimal growth medium with or without l-rhamnose, as indicated. The standard errors were less than 8% of the average activities, except for values less than 1.0, where standard error was less than 25%.
