Mechanisms for the mechanical stresses in the blood-gas barrier. The principal mechanism is the transmural pressure in the capillaries that results in a hoop stress (1). In addition, inflation of the lung to high volumes increases the stress in the alveolar wall (2), part of which is transmitted to the capillary wall.
