Comparison of the histology of the pulmonary gas-exchanging tissue in chicken (top) and dog (bottom). In the mammal, the alveoli are large and the capillaries are strung out along the alveolar wall. In the bird, the pulmonary capillaries are closely surrounded by air capillaries, which provide mechanical support.
