(A) The series L1-L12 and L14 represent the pelt counts between 1820 and 1940, as compiled by Elton and Nicholson (1). The borders on the map represent the demarcations of the regions. (B) The series L15-L22 represent data between 1920 and 1994 summarized by Statistics Canada (36, 37) for which the demarcation is given by the Canadian provincial borders. For the modern series (L15-L22), there were occasional zeros. We added one to the modern series before log-transformation.
