Apoptosis induction in aPKCλ cko lenses (E14.5 and E18.5). Optical sections produced by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy of control and E14.5 and E18.5 aPKCλ cko lenses immunostained with an antibody to active caspase 3. The insets show nuclei of each section counterstained with DAPI. Only a single cell was identified in aPKCλ cko lens sample at E14.5 with caspase 3 staining (asterisk), but no positive cells were found either in aPKCλ cko lens at E18.5 or E14.5 and E18.5 control mouse lenses. A positive caspase 3 signal can be seen in a cell in the ciliary body in aPKCλ cko image at E18.5 (asterisk). Since signal detection intensity was increased to visualise background level signals, some autoimmunofluorescence was seen in red blood cells in surrounding ocular tissues. Scale bars indicate 100 μm.
